      Does this describe you?

      • Does neck pain stop you from turning your head, looking at your phone, or getting comfortable in bed?
      • Do you wake up with a stiff neck or feel a constant tightness that worsens as the day goes on?
      • Does exercising make your neck pain worse?
      • Do you get headaches that start in your neck or back and move to your forehead and eyes?
      • Do you feel aches, sharp pains, or pins-and-needles and numbness that may travel to your arms, hands and fingers.
      • Is neck pain making it difficult for you to lift objects or maintain your grip.

          Understanding Your Neck Pain

          Common Causes of Neck Pain

          • Muscle tension and overuse: Repeated movements or holding your neck in one position for too long, such as sleeping awkwardly or carrying a heavy bag on one shoulder, can cause your muscles to tighten and become painful.

          • Injury or trauma: Sudden movements like whiplash from a car accident or a fall can overstretch or damage the muscles, ligaments, or joints in your neck, leading to discomfort and restricted movement.

          • Age / wear related changes: As we age, the joints in our neck can develop wear. Often described as arthritis or rather scarily as degeneration, these changes may lead to stiffness and chronic pain.

          • Pinched trapped nerve: When a nerve in your neck gets compressed, which may be due to a bulging or herniated disc, or inflamed joint, it can cause pain that radiates down to your shoulder, arm, or hand. You might also experience numbness, tingling, or weakness in your arms or fingers.

          • Stress and tension: Emotional stress can lead to tight muscles, especially in your neck and shoulders, causing aches and discomfort.

Your Path to Lasting Relief: Osteopathy London's 3-Part Neck Pain Programme

          1. Your New Patient Appointment. What can I expect during an osteopathy consultation for neck pain?

          Case History:
Every New Patient Appointment for neck pain begins with a thorough case history, from which we get to understand in detail the pain and other difficulties you face as a result of your neck pain, as well as your medical history, so that we can assess if your general health impacts upon your condition.

          Physical Examination:
A comprehensive physical examination includes: an assessment of your posture and mobility, and tests that clarify the cause of your neck pain.

          Your diagnosis & treatment plan:
Your diagnosis is clearly explained to you. This includes an understanding of the cause of your pain and a treatment plan designed to bring you rapid and long-term relief.

          2. Hands-on treatment for neck pain.

At your New Patient Appointment and further visits, you'll receive hands-on treatment designed to bring rapid pain relief, tailored for you & your condition.

Osteopathy uses a combination of skills, including soft tissue massage, joint mobilisation and stretching. Where appropriate osteopaths may use techniques that create a "pop" from a quick opening of the joint. This can relax the muscles around the joint and improve mobility.

As well as osteopathy, all of our osteopaths are trained in the use of medical acupuncture in the treatment of neck pain and trapped nerves. This can form part of treatment if you wish.

Gentle cranial osteopathy, can be used used by John & Gervais to complement your treatment.

          3. Breaking the neck pain cycle.

Advice and exercises both at your new patient appointment and follow-up visits help reduce your pain, and prevent its return.

To break the cycle you can expect:

          • Postural and ergonomic advice.
          • Depending on your need both stretching & strengthening exercises, as a way to enhance the effects of treatment, and ensure your remain strong and mobile.
          • An appreciation of the impact of stress, sleep and other lifestyle factors on your neck pain or other issues, and practical advice on how to make improvements.

By combining these steps, we’ll work to build long-term resilience and reduce the likelihood of future neck pain episodes.

How Many Osteopathy Treatments Will I Need for Neck Pain Relief?

The number of osteopathy sessions required for lasting neck pain relief is highly individual and depends on several factors, including the cause and severity of your condition, and how long you've experienced symptoms.

While some patients may notice significant improvement after just a few osteopathy sessions for neck pain, more complex or chronic cases might require a longer course of treatment to achieve optimal results.

During your initial visit, after a thorough assessment, we will discuss an estimated neck pain recovery time and outline a tailored osteopathy treatment approach designed to help you achieve your goals and sustain the improvements made.
