- Is pain or discomfort making it difficult for you to do simple tasks like putting on shoes or socks, bending, or sitting for extended periods?
- Are you experiencing numbness or tingling in your leg, as if it's "fallen asleep".
- Are you finding it hard to lie comfortably, making it difficult to get a good night’s sleep?
- Have you noticed muscle weakness in your leg or foot, causing you to stumble or struggle to lift your foot while walking?
Sciatica can cause many of the issues described above. Everyone's experience of sciatica is unique.
Understanding your sciatica pain: What it is & common causes
What is Sciatica?
Sciatica arises from pressure on the sciatic nerve. The sciatica nerve emerges from the lower back, and provides most of the nerve supply to the legs. It is the longest and largest nerve in the body.
It typically causes pain that can be felt in the buttock, the leg and as far as the foot. Other symptoms may include numbness or pins and needles or muscle weakness.
3 common causes of sciatica
- Disc issues: Over time the discs between the individual vertebrae in your spine may develop signs of wear. This can progress to where the disc loses it shape, and the bulging disc presses upon the sciatic nerve. Further progress of this wear can produce a rupture of the disc wall, and prolapse of the jelly like material from the inner disc, to were it presses on the sciatic nerve.
- Wear & tear related changes: Bony changes occur along with disc issues. In response to age and repeated stress, the bones of the spine, the vertebrae, can change shape, and these changes can reduce and eventually crowd and pinch the sciatic nerve as it leaves the spine.
- Piriformis syndrome: The piriformis muscle in your buttock can irritate the sciatic nerve if it becomes tight or inflamed. This can lead to pain radiating from the buttock down the leg.

Your Path to Lasting Relief: Osteopathy London's 3-Part Sciatica Pain Programme
1. Your New Patient Appointment. What can I expect during an osteopathy session for sciatica pain?
Case History:
Every New Patient Appointment begins with a thorough case history, from which we get to understand in detail the pain and other difficulties you face as a result of sciatica, as well as your medical history, so that we can assess if your general health impacts upon your condition.
Physical Examination:
A comprehensive physical examination includes: an assessment of your posture and mobility, and tests that clarify if sciatica is the cause of your issue, and the source of this irritation to the sciatic nerve.
Your diagnosis & treatment plan:
Your diagnosis is clearly explained to you. This includes an understanding of the cause of your sciatica and a treatment plan designed to bring you rapid and long-term relief.

2. Hands-on treatment for sciatica pain.
At your New Patient Appointment and further visits, you'll receive hands-on treatment designed to bring rapid pain relief, tailored for you & your condition.
Osteopathy uses a combination of skills, including soft tissue massage, joint mobilisation and stretching. Where appropriate osteopaths may use techniques that create a "pop" from a quick opening of the joint. This can relax the muscles around the joint and improve mobility.
As well as osteopathy, all of our osteopaths are trained in the use of medical acupuncture in the treatment of sciatica. This can form part of treatment if you wish.
Gentle cranial osteopathy, can be used used by John & Gervais to complement your treatment.

3. Breaking the sciatica pain cycle.
Advice and exercises both at your new patient appointment and follow-up visits help reduce your sciatica pain, and prevent its return.
To break the cycle you can expect:
- Postural and ergonomic advice.
- Depending on your need both stretching & strengthening exercises, as a way to enhance the effects of treatment, and ensure your remain strong and mobile.
- An appreciation of the impact of stress, sleep and other lifestyle factors on your sciatica or other issues, and practical advice on how to make improvements.
